The mission of KIPP Philadelphia Schools is to develop the character, knowledge, and skills of our students so they will succeed in college, giving them the freedom to shape their futures and positively affect their communities.
How We Do It
The Commitment to Excellence
KIPP is a partnership among parents, students, and teachers that puts learning first. Once a child is enrolled in a KIPP Philadelphia School, we do a “home visit” with each family where a staff member from KIPP talks about the school with a parent or guardian, and the new KIPP student. At the end of the meeting, all three parties sign a learning pledge called the “Commitment to Excellence,” which ensures that each will do whatever it takes to help the student learn. The Five Pillars
KIPP schools share a core set of operating principles known as the “Five Pillars”: High Expectations, Choice & Commitment, More Time, Power to Lead, and Focus on Results.
One of the “Five Pillars” is more time. KIPP Philadelphia’s students are in school learning 60 percent more than average public school students, from 7:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on weekdays, every other Saturday, and for three weeks during the summer. Rigorous college-preparatory instruction is balanced with extracurricular activities, experiential field lessons, and character development. In spite of the long hours, average daily attendance at KIPP Philadelphia Schools is consistently over 95 percent. To learn more about KIPP’s Five Pillars, click here |

| At KIPP Philadelphia Schools we know actions speak louder than words, and the actual results accomplished by our children and teachers prove what is possible for children in Philadelphia. We strive to ensure our actions are always informed by a consistent set of Regional Beliefs that are shared by every member of our Team and Family. While we may sometimes fall short of meeting the lofty ambitions implicit in these Beliefs, we are willing to admit to ourselves when we are falling short, and we work to find a solution. It is our hope that broadcasting these Beliefs for the world to see will help everyone who reads them understand what is important to us, and what we believe about teaching, learning, our children, and our place in our community. |

1. The extraordinary efforts we make at KIPP Philadelphia are a necessary response to the achievement gap. KIPP Philadelphia is a solution, not the solution, to this problem.
2. All children will learn if they are taught in a high-quality way and in a safe and orderly environment.
3. By spending more time on task, we are able to focus on all the results that we believe are important, qualitative and quantitative.
4. Character is as important as academic skills for success in both school and life.
5. In their experiences at KIPP Philadelphia, our students, families, and staff should feel valued and respected.
6. Our students should have a positive influence on their families & communities.
7. We must recruit, develop, retain, and reward a diverse team of outstanding people.
8. We have high expectations for our students, and what we expect of our students we must ourselves embody and be committed to developing.
9. In order to accomplish our mission we must build positive, trust-based relationships with our students, families, communities and each other.
10. We do what we say, in alignment with our beliefs, values, mission, vision and KIPP’s Five Pillars.

KIPP, or the Knowledge is Power Program, currently serves nearly 20,000 students nationwide. These students attend one of the 82 KIPP schools that operate in 19 states and the District of Columbia.
KIPP Philadelphia Schools (KPS) is a network of open-enrollment, college-preparatory public charter schools, and part of the national KIPP Network of schools. KPS currently serves grades 5-8 at KIPP Philadelphia Charter School and serves grade 5 at KIPP West Philadelphia Preparatory Charter School.
84% of our students qualify for the Federal Meals Program, and 99% are African-American or Hispanic. Despite the fact that our students consistently enter our schools 2-3 grade levels behind, by providing a safe and structured learning environment, more time in school, and high-quality teachers, 100% of our students have been accepted to college-preparatory high schools.
